For Carmen and Oliver, their love story is proof that sometimes the best relationships unfold on their own timeline. The pair actually attended the same college but didn’t truly meet until after graduation, when they both found themselves living in Chicago. Even then, romance wasn’t immediately in the cards. It wasn’t until five years later, with 1,200 miles between them, that their relationship took a romantic turn! By that point, they had already built a strong connection through years of staying in touch with snail mail and quarterly FaceTime check-ins. When distance eventually brought them together, the foundation was already there—and their long-distance relationship between Denver and Cleveland became the beginning of something much bigger!

Oliver’s proposal was a nod to where their relationship began. He took Carmen back to the ice cream shop they visited during his first trip to see her in Cleveland. As they enjoyed their treats, Oliver suddenly “dropped” his ice cream cone and got down on one knee. The unexpected moment turned a familiar place into a treasured part of their love story.

The engagement ring is just as distinctive! Oliver had always envisioned a yellow diamond, and when the couple began looking at rings, that idea immediately felt right. Although they initially thought they would design a ring together, everything changed when they saw the ring that would ultimately become Carmen’s. “It was game over,” Carmen exclaims. Featuring a sparkling yellow diamond surrounded by a halo, the ring has a vintage-inspired character that makes it feel completely one-of-a-kind. Most importantly, Carmen loves that it is anything but ordinary. “She is never not sparkling,” she says.

After recently moving to Michigan, the couple knew they wanted to work with their wedding photographer for their engagement session, too. They chose Angela because of the way she captures each couple’s individual flair. “We could really feel each of her couples’ personalities in her photos,” Carmen says. Her familiarity with Michigan, combined with her creativity and photography style, made her the perfect choice to document both their engagement and upcoming wedding day.

The location was equally personal. Oliver’s family has vacationed in Glen Arbor for years, making the northern Michigan destination a special place for him—and one that Carmen has quickly grown to love, too. Their annual trips are filled with biking, tennis, running and exploring everything the charming town has to offer. For the couple, the area was much more than a beautiful backdrop; it was a place connected to some of their favorite memories together!

Authenticity is guiding the couple as they plan their wedding. Rather than getting caught up in what a wedding is “supposed” to look like, Carmen and Oliver are focusing on creating a celebration that feels unmistakably like them. “Instead of thinking about our ‘wedding’ we have been thinking about us and the biggest party we will get to throw,” Carmen shares.
