An Estate in Bloom: WeddingDay’s Exclusive Chicago Cover Shoot

The Vision

The vision for our spring/summer Chicago digital issue cover shoot, aptly named An Estate in Bloom, was centered on creating a wedding day that felt both romantic and effortlessly refined. Planner Ritz Mejia of Wonderfully Made envisioned "a wedding day that celebrated soft spring colors, intentional details and the feeling of stepping into a blooming European-inspired garden without ever leaving the mansion." A palette of buttercream yellow, soft peach, ivory and dusty blue brought warmth and freshness to the design, while editorial styling, garden-inspired florals, intentional color layering and elevated tablescapes added depth and sophistication. Though current trends influenced the overall aesthetic, Ritz notes that the team sought to interpret them "through a classic and enduring lens," resulting in a romantic atmosphere that balanced the grandeur of the space with an intimate, cohesive feel!

The Venue

The Haley Mansion in Joliet, Illinois offered the perfect blend of historic grandeur and timeless elegance. This stunning 100-year-old property is filled with luxurious details, from elegant chandeliers, marble floors and stately columns to panoramic glass views overlooking the estate's lush gardens. "The venue's blend of luxury and warmth allowed us to create a story that felt both elevated and inviting," shares Ritz. Danielle Schury Photography expertly showcased each unique space throughout the property, capturing romantic portraits in the mansion's character-filled rooms, a garden ceremony beneath the pergola nestled between two trickling waterfalls, an elegant ballroom reception and a dreamy sweetheart table vignette in the light-filled conservatory. With its silk-draped ballroom ceiling, impeccable service and countless architectural details, The Haley Mansion proved that a venue can feel both magnificently grand and wonderfully welcoming!

The Florals

The floral design by Stems and Petals brought the vision to life through lush, garden-inspired arrangements bursting with texture and movement. Roses, carnations, stock, chrysanthemums, baby's breath and wax flower were thoughtfully layered throughout the spaces, creating organic dimension while making a statement within the mansion's grand setting. Ritz explains that "the color palette was inspired by the freshness of spring and the elegance of the estate itself," with buttercream yellow serving as the hero hue because it "felt joyful, unexpected and full of warmth." Soft peach blooms added romance, dusty blue accents introduced depth and contrast and ivory flowers provided balance throughout the design. The diverse mix of blooms created visual interest and texture at every turn, resulting in florals that felt both abundant and effortlessly elegant!

The Décor

The décor embraced a soft, garden-inspired palette with accents of gold, creating a fresh yet sophisticated aesthetic that felt perfectly at home within the mansion's elegant surroundings. The Haley Mansion's rentals including opulent linens, elegant glassware, vintage gold-rimmed china and gold Chiavari chairs laid the foundation for timeless tablescape designs, while their ornate candelabras served as striking focal points that echoed the garden motif with their floral detailing. Thoughtful details from local vendor collaborations added even more personality to the design, including a statement welcome mirror from Chic and Classy Events. Together, these layered elements created a refined atmosphere that felt romantic, inviting and elevated!

The Cake

The cake by Beauty and the Baker was undoubtedly one of the shoot's most striking statement pieces! Designed as a grand multi-tiered masterpiece, each tier showcased its own unique color palette and intricate detailing while seamlessly tying into the overall spring-inspired aesthetic. Displayed atop an elegant gold cake stand provided by The Haley Mansion, the confection became a focal point of the reception design, adding another layer of sophistication to the reception. Beyond its stunning design, the cake was every bit as delicious as it was beautiful, making it a true feast for both the eyes and the palate!

The Looks

The shoot's fashion balanced timeless romance with elevated sophistication. The strapless ceremony dress from Diana's Bridal featured a straight-across neckline and delicate floral embroidery to complement the garden theme. Paired with a flowing veil, the gown embodied the soft, romantic atmosphere of the shoot. For the reception, the bride changed into a second strapless gown with a scoop neckline, intricate lace detailing, subtle sparkle and embroidered floral accents that added a touch of glamour to the overall aesthetic! Complementing the spring-inspired palette, the groom wore a light blue suit from SuitShop paired with a blush tie, a fresh and modern alternative to traditional wedding attire. Beauty styling by Rowe Glow was intentionally understated, as Ritz notes, "Because both the venue and gowns carried such an elegant European-inspired feel, the beauty styling was designed to complement the overall vision rather than compete with it." A relaxed low bun with soft face-framing tendrils and naturally radiant makeup completed the look, enhancing the model's features while maintaining an effortlessly bridal feel.

The Stationery

The stationery suite by Adorable Designs set the tone for the entire editorial with a look that was equal parts dreamy and sophisticated. Ritz shares, "We wanted the paper goods to feel romantic, refined and thoughtfully detailed while incorporating the soft spring palette." Elegant script fonts, classic wax seals and unique oval-shaped invitation pieces brought an elevated, European-inspired feel to the suite, while a custom illustration of The Haley Mansion tucked inside the envelope liner created a thoughtful and personal touch.
