A Picture-Perfect Engagement Session in Grand Rapids: The Surprise Proposal of Kenzie & Jack

Kenzie and Jack first crossed paths at Cornerstone University, where Jack played basketball and Kenzie played soccer. Although they shared plenty of mutual friends, they didn’t officially become friends until the end of their sophomore year. By the end of their junior year, friendship had blossomed into something more, and the rest, as they say, is history.

When it came time for their engagement, Kenzie thought she was simply heading out for a couples photo session. Little did she know, Jack and their photographer, Tae, had been planning something much bigger! "The engagement itself was a complete surprise," Kenzie shares. In fact, she had originally reached out to her photographer in October about taking couples photos, but Tae was unfortunately already booked. Months later, Tae reached out with availability in May—and unbeknownst to Kenzie, she and Jack had already begun plotting the perfect surprise! That surprise came during the photo shoot itself, when Jack popped the question and transformed an already meaningful session into the moment they had been waiting for. With their photographer in on the secret, the proposal was beautifully documented, giving Kenzie and Jack photographs that capture not only their engagement but the exact moment they stepped into this exciting new season together.

Kenzie's ring was just as thoughtfully considered. The couple began ring shopping together during the winter, giving Kenzie the opportunity to explore different styles while leaving the final details to Jack. She knew she wanted a Dutch marquise-cut diamond set on a gold engraved band, but she also wanted him to have a personal hand in the design. Jack chose a delicate swirled engraving pattern with their initials subtly hidden within it—a sentimental detail that makes the ring uniquely theirs.

For the location, the couple chose The Highlands as their backdrop. Tae sent Kenzie a selection of locations along with examples of her work at each, and the lush greenery of The Highlands immediately stood out. "I chose The Highlands because I loved all the greenery!" she says. The natural setting provided a beautiful backdrop for the couple's portraits while allowing their connection to remain the focus.

Kenzie also wanted variety in their session, opting for two distinct looks. She envisioned one casual outfit and another that felt a little more elevated, working with Tae to pull both styles together. The result gave the session a natural progression and allowed the couple to showcase different sides of their personalities.

With the proposal now complete, Kenzie and Jack are just beginning to imagine their wedding day. While Kenzie already has a few ideas in mind, the couple is still in the early stages of planning. Fortunately, they have plenty of support surrounding them, with friends who have already navigated the wedding-planning process or are currently in the midst of their own celebrations. "We have a lot of help when it comes to planning!" Kenzie says. For now, they get to savor the excitement of being engaged—and the incredible story behind the photographs that captured the moment Jack turned an ordinary photo session into the beginning of their forever.
