Even though Zavier grew up in Germany, he loved football and managed to make it to the NFL, signing with the Indianapolis Colts (and now playing for the Minnesota Vikings!). McKenna came to Indianapolis to pursue her professional race car driving career, but unfortunately was hit by a careless driver on the highway. Luckily, that didn't stop her from racing, but did put a hold on her American Ninja Warrior training (of which she competed on two different seasons!). Unbeknownst to her, when McKenna returned to that training, she was at the same facility where the Colts trained. They never met at the gym, but the trainer invited McKenna to church, where she met Zavier. They started dating after they both attended an athlete ministry conference a few weeks after they met!
We are totally obsessed with McKenna's stunning gown! "My dress was absolutely perfect and stunning in every way. I felt like a princess," McKenna raves. "I tried on about ten dresses before I found the one, and I knew right away. They offered it in pure white or one with a nude under layer, and I went with the nude in order to see the pattern in the lace better." She also added custom straps with flowers and lace to make the dress even more gorgeous, and we couldn't agree more with that decision!
"I never thought I would be married and never spent any time dreaming of what my wedding day would be like or taking any notes from anyone else’s wedding. I learned a lot and loved the process because it felt more like a gift rather than an expectation," McKenna admits. She actually used WeddingDay as one of her planning tools to help find inspiration for their wedding day! Many of the vendors they ended up choosing came form recommendations and reviews. Their focus was on getting reliable, talented and personable people to help make their day even more special.
As for the theme, they went for an elegant wedding that was also unique to them. Instead of a classic black and white elegance, they went with a pop of bold color. McKenna explains, "I chose a jewel tone palette and was just so drawn to it. Everything with our colors turned out stunning. They were unique but beautiful." One of the best places you can see their color scheme is in the stunning floral arrangements from JP Parker Flowers. We love how the bouquets and centerpieces turned out both colorful and elegant!
What We Love
When they were planning their wedding, McKenna and Zavier tried to put themselves in their guests' shoes and make it a fun experience for them as a "thank you" for coming to celebrate with them. A few special touches include having Mufasa from "The Lion King" on Broadway sing instead of doing speeches, displaying their helmets at the reception and keeping everything running smoothly with nothing going too long, leaving their guests bored. Overall, it was a hit! "Our wedding day was so special, and we received tremendous feedback with many attendees saying it was the best wedding they’ve been to, and I share that in the humblest of ways as just honest feedback," McKenna shares.
Advice from the Couple
McKenna and Zavier advise, "We received tons of similar advice, and a lot of it was pretty accurate. We would just say remember it’s a gift to be in love and have a wedding, so treat every part of the wedding process as a gift and not an entitlement or burden. We know it can be stressful, but coming into it with a heart of gratitude is so important. Second would be to cherish every second."
